5 Signs It’s Time To Give Up on Your Marriage or Relationship

Emotional attachments can make it difficult to understand when it’s time to end a relationship or marriage, but when we are honest with ourselves, we can recognize when we’re experiencing more than one of these clear signs that it’s time to move on:

1. You Are Not Equally Committed to Moving Forward

When one person wants to work out issues together, but the other person has no interest in working on the relationship, you’ve reached a dead end of communication that makes solving even the smallest insignificant problems much harder than they need to be.

2. Spending Time Together Feels Awkward and Forced

If someone feels forced to spend time with their partner, that is a sure sign that they are not interested in their relationship any longer. Continuing to spend time together in this situation will only create more emotional burden and resentment for both people.

3. You’ve Started Searching For A Different Partner

Searching for a different partner while you’re still in a relationship means you’ve already decided that you’d rather start a different relationship than continue to work on the relationship you’re currently in. If you’re already seriously one foot out the door, it’s better to make a clean break than to continue delaying the inevitable.

4. Abuse of Any Kind

No relationship is worth enduring abuse of any kind. Choosing to stay in an abusive relationship is self-neglect. No relationship with another person is worth more than your own personal mental health and emotional and physical wellbeing. If you are experiencing abuse, seek help immediately. Check yourself. If you’re already looking for advice on when to leave, than you’re already ready to leave and reading outside opinions and tips are just additional ways to convince yourself of something you already intuitively have decided. It’s probably time to start reading articles about how to leave your relationship. If you identify with any of the above and need additional support and guidance on how to leave, please don’t hesitate to email us to set up a time to talk.

What does a toxic marriage look like?

Simply put, a toxic relationship is one in which partners don't support each other. Instead, one person is always trying to undermine the other. There is a sense of competitiveness instead of support. Negative experiences far outnumber the positive ones.

In a healthy marriage, partners are emotionally supportive, trustworthy, loyal, and loving. They enjoy each other’s company, are committed to raising a family (if they have one), and have admiration and respect for one another.

Sounds simple, right?

But in the real world, marriages are far more complicated. Maintaining a successful relationship requires immense effort. Once the rush of endorphins is over, the illusions quickly shatter and a partner’s imperfections become obvious. And while it’s perfectly normal to have waxing and waning intimacy, even disagreements, what’s not acceptable is a toxic marriage, which can play havoc with your health and happiness. Living with a toxic person should never be an option. The first step in fixing an unhealthy relationship is understanding what are the signs of a toxic marriage. And if fixing it doesn’t work, then you should learn how to get out of a toxic marriage.
