When you are eligible for two benefits, such as a survivor benefit and a retirement payment, Social Security doesn’t add them together but rather pays you the higher of the two amounts. If that’s the retirement benefit, then the retirement benefit is all you’ll get. If the survivor benefit is higher, Social Security pays the retirement benefit first and tops it up to match the amount of the survivor benefit. You are entitled to: 100 percent of the deceased’s benefit if you have reached your full retirement age. (That's 66 for survivors born between 1945 and 1956 and will gradually rise to 67 over the next several years). 71.5 percent to 99 percent if you are between 60 — in most cases, the earliest you can draw survivor benefits — and full retirement age. (If you are disabled, the minimum age is 50.) 75 percent if you are caring for a child from the marriage who is under 16 or disabled, regardless of your own age. Read More »You may be eligible to collect Social Security as early as 62, but waiting until age 70 yields greater benefits for most people.
That higher baseline would last for the rest of your retirement and serve as the basis for future increases linked to inflation. While it's important to consider your personal circumstances—it's not always possible to wait, particularly if you are in poor health or can't afford to delay—the benefits of waiting can be significant. Be aware that if you decide to wait past age 65, you may still need to sign up for Medicare. In some circumstances your Medicare coverage may be delayed and cost more if you don't sign up at age 65. If you start Social Security benefits early, you'll automatically be enrolled into Medicare Parts A and B when you turn age 65. Your annual Social Security statement will list your projected benefits between age 62 to 70, assuming you continue to work and earn about the same amount through those ages. If you need a copy of your annual statement, you can request one or view it online on the Social Security Administration (SSA) portal.
