The Biggest Downfall of a Relationship is not a Lack of Communication

Nine times out of 10 when you ask people what the essential aspect of a healthy and happy marriage — or any relationship, is? Their answer is ‘communication.’ (Yes, I just made up that statistic, but in my experience, that is almost always the answer.) Of course, there are a LOT of things that go into making a relationship work. But if you are both trying and you are both staying away from cheating, abuse, and other big things that break up marriages, then there are other more silent downfalls that can beset a relationship. Most couples believe it has to do with communication.

It Is All About Communication Right? Wrong!

Communication rules the day in our relationships, and as long as we are communicating, we should all get along just fine and have wonderful relationships. Right? Well, technically, no. Yes, communicating our wants, needs, and just communicating, in general, is excellent. Still, there is one specific thing you need to understand about yourself and then communicate with the other person for the relationship to work. That one thing is your bag full of expectations. The Biggest Downfall of a Relationship is Not a Lack of Communication, But Unmet Expectations That’s right; your expectations are the things that will break down your relationships — not a lack of communication. The author of the article entitled ‘The Silent Killer of Relationships,’ was listening to a presentation and thought he knew the answer to why so many marriages end in divorce, he said, “ Sex, money, and communication!” The presenter he was listening to shot back, “Wrong, Those are symptoms of the real problem.” He then went on to explain that the real problem was

‘unmet expectations.’

We all come into our relationships with a bag full of expectations. Some of us dump those expectations onto the ground and display them with pride, so everyone knows exactly what we want and how we want it — but most of us do not do that. We take our bag, and we hide it in the closet, hoping that our significant other will be able to tell what we want and what we expect by what we do or say. Many people don’t like to come out and say what they want or expect, but you have to! No one is a mind reader, so, often, you have to explain your expectations. “Expectation is the Root of All Heartache.” — William Shakespeare

Example

This is a simple example, but it explains the root of the problem. One of you thinks that the other should put away the laundry, that is the expectation. You gather the clothes, wash the clothes, dry the clothes, and fold the clothes and you think that the least the other person could do is put their clothes away. If you do not communicate this, how are they supposed to know? Maybe they think that because you did everything else with the laundry that you prefer it done a certain way and you want to do it all? You have to communicate your expectations if you want them met. Communicating your expectations for yourself, for your significant other, and for your family is the best way to avoid arguments and that silent relationship killer of unmet expectations.

agape, Greek agapē, in the New Testament, the fatherly love of God for humans, as well as the human reciprocal love for God. In Scripture, the transcendent agape love is the highest form of love and is contrasted with eros, or erotic love, and philia, or brotherly love. In John 3:16, a verse that is often described as a summary of the Gospel message, agape is the word used for the love that moved God to send his only son for the world’s redemption. The term necessarily extends to the love of one’s fellow humans, as the reciprocal love between God and humans is made manifest in one’s unselfish love of others. See also charity. The Church Fathers used agape to designate both a rite (using bread and wine) and a meal of fellowship to which the poor were invited (Jude 1:12). The historical relationship between the agape rite, the Lord’s Supper, and the Eucharist is still uncertain. Some scholars believe the agape was a form of the Lord’s Supper and the Eucharist the sacramental aspect of that celebration. Others interpret agape as referring to a fellowship meal held in imitation of gatherings attended by Jesus and his disciples; the Eucharist is believed to have been joined to this meal later but eventually to have become totally separated from it.
