What is Isaiah 43 19 about?

Isaiah's narrative quoted God as his prophecy recollected the tired hardness history of his nation: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:19, NIV). All of the Bible revels in God's hopefulness.

Why was the first Christmas such a surprise to nearly everybody who experienced it? After centuries of prophecy of the coming of the Messiah, why were people caught unaware? Why are the ways of God such a surprise to us? What is it about us humans that finds God’s hope so hard to follow? We have the Bible, 2,000 years of history, and the personal experiences of millions of Christians, yet find the will of God to be elusive. The answer has to do with the sheer wisdom of God. God specializes in doing a brand-new thing. Being caught by surprise is always a possibility for us humans. The all-knowing God is the author of newness. Our hopes and capacities exhaust themselves. We lose hope. “Long lay the world in sin and error pining,” as the Christmas carol reminds us. At the announcement of God’s new thing in the coming of Jesus after the surprise of it all, there was “the thrill of hope,” the weary world rejoicing. From time immemorial humanity has longed to get beyond the tired hopelessness of sin, error, and human pride. God’s hope is of an entirely different nature than all other hope. Its source has absolute power and resources to carry out its success. In addition, God is the master of newness. Only God has seen everything and everybody as they were introduced “brand-new” to the material world. If there was ever a person that experienced the weariness of human pride, it was the prophet Isaiah. He lived 700 years before Jesus. He saw his once-proud nation Judah as it became a mere subservient client for the vast Babylonian Empire. Isaiah’s narrative quoted God as his prophecy recollected the tired hardness history of his nation: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:19, NIV). All of the Bible revels in God’s hopefulness. “The LORD will create a new thing on the earth. . .I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint” (Jeremiah 31:22a,25). “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old is gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). “There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. He who was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I am making everything new!’” (Revelation 21:4-5). Life literally gets old. We do not have the full capacity to renew life or hope. Only God knows how to renew creation, including the human heart. “And I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. And I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 36:26). Only God can raise up a new heaven and a new earth. Only God can renew the soul. Whatever hope is, God can make it happen. God, and only God, has the full capacity to give hope credibility. God promised to renew all of creation. God promises to renew our world, down to the smallest physical detail. That is what a new heaven and a new earth are all about. God gives us a new and resilient hope, based on divine trustworthiness and ability.

May we revel in that as we start this new year together.
