Today’s chapter is Romans 8. Look at verses 5-6: “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” Lots going on in this chapter and again, as with all of the book of Romans it’s difficult to put up just a verse or two. So Paul illustrates for any of us in question as to what side of this cosmic question we’re living on. Now, this isn’t to pass judgment on other people. The Bible makes this clear that we’re not to go the extreme of judging people but to leave it up to God in eternal matters such as salvation. But please, if you’re wondering who it is you’re serving – remember yesterday’s post – stop and look at what you do with your life. Now, I can’t go too far with this because there aren’t any animals out there working 80 hours a week to get a bigger boat, but here’s my point…

What do animals live for? They want to eat, have shelter from the elements, and procreate. If you want to stretch the example, there are plenty who like to play as well, but overall it’s simple enough to understand that animals aren’t concerned about the bigger things in life like justice and mercy, fairness and love. Any argument so far?

So consider what you personally have focused your life on. Remember that Jesus told us in Matthew 6:25-24…don’t worry about what you’ll eat, what you’ll wear, what you’ll drink. Instead, Jesus tells us, we’re to seek first the kingdom of God, much like Paul is reminding us here. So what are you focused on in life?

If you’re the type who’s main focus in stuff, well, we can safely call that being carnal, no? If you’re main focus is just making it paycheck to paycheck, trying to survive, well, that’s pretty carnal, no? Consider what God has promised those who are saved. He’s promised to feed/clothe/take care of us…so what’s there to worry about? Is He trustworthy or not?

What this verse is telling us is that if we trust God to provide for us then our lives will be lived in a certain way. If we’re not trusting God to provide for us then we’ll be doing it on our own and our lives will likewise correspond to that. Now, please, don’t think God’s telling you or me to sit on our duffs like a lazy bum. The Bible tells us that if we don’t work, we shouldn’t eat (2 Thessalonians 3:10). That’s pretty clear and simple. So no excuses here… But what are you setting your mind on? Carnal things like buying the bigger and better toy or home? If you couldn’t store anymore clothes in your closet or you couldn’t think of a spot to put the newest gadget in your collection, well, odds are good you have an issue with this verse today… This is also not a call for voluntary poverty, either. But it is a call to consider what we value as important and to realize that if what we value is carnal things and we don’t concern ourselves with the eternal things that matter, it’s because Jesus hasn’t come to make His home in our hearts. Again, Paul tells us here to examine ourselves and be honest before God!
