The study compared data from the two genders — and revealed women experience fear on a greater scale than their male counterparts. (iStock) Women fear everyday life scenarios more than men and are more likely to express "great fear" of certain scenarios like sexual assault, physical attack and mugging, according to a new study. The study from the law firm Farah and Farah revealed the percentage of men and women surveyed who indicated situations they fear — and precautions they took to feel more safe. Among women surveyed, about 53% greatly fear sexual assault, compared to 24% of men. Half of women greatly feared a physical attack. Only 34% of men expressed the same fear. Women were more than twice as likely to experience fear walking or jogging in their own neighborhood at night, allowing maintenance workers inside while home alone, and taking the garbage out alone at night. When doing something simple like going place-to-place, women experience more fear on a larger scale than men, according to the study. Walking to a car alone at night in a parking lot, women in the study indicated they experience fear 162% more than men. If they took an Uber or Lyft or taxi alone, 139% more women than men experience fear. Jessica Buss, a 21-year-old college student at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, said she is scared of “walking home from campus at night” and “walking at night in general.” In 27 out of 28 everyday life scenarios, a larger percent of women indicated feeling fear than men. The only setting in which men carried more fear than women was going to the gym — 4.4% of men felt fear while 2.2% of women indicated the same emotion. Using the stairs or elevators alone at night, over half of women said they feel fear — 200% more than the 17% of men who said they feel fear. The study also showed safety measures men and women take in their everyday life to feel safe. Most women expressed feeling safer by keeping doors locked when at home — and 62.4% said they felt “much safer” when they did. This compares to 70.9% of men who feel safer with their doors locked all the time, and 53.3% who felt “much safer” when they did. When walking alone, 58.4% all women feel much safer when hold keys between their fingers — a common safety precaution that can be used to defend oneself against an attacker. However, only 26.7% of men indicated the same.

One 51-year-old woman from Texas who responded to the survey said she “quit a job in a rural setting that had late night hours.” Other women said they took precautions like carrying a rock or hammer in their purse, changing a previously walked route, crossing the street and avoiding eye contact with people. Four times as many women than men felt safer when dressing modestly or conservatively in public places. Another woman who responded to the study said she stopped wearing makeup in hopes she “will be more unattractive to someone if they would want to attack me.” Over two-thirds of women indicated they feel safer when they text or call someone when they arrive home safely — while 36.7% of men said they use technology the same way to feel safe. Around 70% of women and men indicated they feel much safer applying for a concealed carry license or carrying a personal alarm. When considering factors that contributed to feelings of safety, media influenced 13% of women, while 27% said news coverage influenced their feelings. Additionally, 14.6% of women indicated experience from people “in their personal networks” influenced their feelings of safety, compared to 21.8% of men. The most influential factor that influenced people’s feelings of safety was “personal experiences,” according to the study. One-quarter of women were influenced by their own experiences, compared to 31% of men. To feel safer in her everyday life, Stacy Phu, a 20-year-old student at Hunter College in New York City, had her own personal solution.

“Avoid men.”
