What is a tall girl personality?

Chu and Geary (2005) find that tall females are generally perceived to be more intelligent, affluent, assertive and ambitious than short females. Deady and Smith (2006) provide evidence to suggest that taller women are less maternal and more career orientated.

It is widely believed that physical appearance exerts a strong influence on character perception. Dion, Walster, and Berscheid (1972) classic person perception study demonstrated that physically attractive individuals were rated as having more socially desirable personalities, being more professionally successful and more maritally successful than persons of lesser physical attractiveness. Scores of studies have examined the ‘beautiful-is-good’ halo effect (e.g. see Hatfield & Sprecher, 1986; for review) and Feingold’s (1992) meta-analysis of the literature suggests that physically attractive people are perceived to be more sociable, dominant, sexually warm, mentally healthy, intelligent and socially skilled than less attractive people (although the actual relationships between attractiveness and these characteristics appear to be rather more trivial). Nevertheless, physical attractiveness is a complex characteristic. While there can normally be a good degree of consensus concerning the attractiveness of an individual (e.g. Singh, 2004; Singh & Luis, 1995), there is also undoubtedly a large degree of variation in opinion concerning the attractiveness of any specific individual. A more objectively quantifiable characteristic that is also known to be related to person perception is height. Tallness, at least in men, has been shown to influence person perception in ways not dissimilar to attractiveness. Tall men appear to be perceived as more intelligent, professional and employable (Kassarjian, 1963; Kurtz, 1969; Wilson, 1968) as well as appearing more attractive to women (Feingold, 1982; Hensley, 1994; Jackson & Ervin, 1992) than shorter men. Tall men also appear to have greater reproductive success than shorter men, with a lower probability of remaining childless (Nettle, 2002a) and, ultimately, a higher number of children (Mueller & Mazur, 2001; Pawlowski, Dunbar, & Lipowicz, 2000).

However, substantially less is known concerning possible relationships between height and perceived personal characteristics in women. Studies of height and person perception have focused almost exclusively on male targets, presumably reflecting the implicit assumption in western culture that height is not one of the factors that influence perception of women. Certainly, in terms of the aforementioned work on attractiveness, the few studies that have touched upon this issue have shown that height does not affect perceptions of female attractiveness in the same manner as it seems to affect male attractiveness (e.g. Hensley, 1994). Nevertheless, two studies have shown that tallness enhanced perceptions of a woman’s professional status (Bonuso, 1983; Jackson & Ervin, 1992) and, on a related level, Melamed (1992) provided some evidence of a weak but positive relationship between height and actual dominance in women. However, a search of the literature revealed no studies specifically addressing female height and character perception and the question remains as to whether height influences perception of women’s character; are tall women perceived to be different to women of more diminutive stature?

It is known that, traditionally, men are viewed as having more instrumental character traits while women exhibit more expressive character traits (e.g. Lindner, Ryckman, Gold, & Stone, 1995). It is conceivable, however, that tall stature may increase the perceived masculinity of a woman and it may therefore be expected that tall women are perceived as more instrumental and less expressive than shorter women. When Leaper (1995) examined liking of expressive and instrumental females, it was found that men strongly preferred expressive females to instrumental females while women showed a much weaker preference toward this traditional female image. Thus, if female tallness biases character perception in favour of more instrumental traits, it may well function only for male perceptions.

From a methodological perspective, the most ecologically valid approach to examining the influence of height on character perception is to present pictures of individuals of different height and ask for ratings of character. First impressions and snap judgements are often made on the basis of visual perception and it was this process that we wished to mimic. We showed digitally manipulated photographs of apparently tall or short women and asked participants for their ratings of the women on a range of character dimensions. The character dimensions used here reflect the instrumental/expressive trait distinction as well as more general characteristics. We predict that tall women will receive higher ratings on instrumental characteristics while shorter women will receive higher ratings on expressive characteristics. We also predict that the ratings from men will show this pattern more strongly than do ratings from women.
