Read More »Road signs come in many different shapes and colors, and keeping track of each color can be difficult. But studying your traffic signs and knowing what each type of road sign means could be the difference between reaching your destination safely or not. Here are some tips to improve your knowledge of traffic sign colors: Black and white: Posted regulations (i.e., speed limits) are seen on black and white road signs. Regulatory signs tell you what you can and can’t do on the road. Some signs show maximum and minimum speed limits for all types of vehicles on freeways and limited access highways. In construction and maintenance zones, posted speeds legally reduce the speed limit on that portion of the highway. Unless necessary for safety, driving slower than the minimum is illegal. Yellow: Yellow signifies WARNING. Yellow traffic signs stand for slowing down, driving with caution, or a general warning. It may be yellow, or yellow-green with black wording or symbols. This sign warns you about hazards or possible hazards on or near the roadway. Green: This color is used for guide signs. These signs tell you where you are, which way to go and the distance. Blue: This color is also used for guide signs. These signs tell you about services along the roadway such as rest areas, hospitals, gas stations, and lodging. Orange: You’ll see orange traffic signs anywhere there’s construction occurring. This color is used to alert you to possible dangers ahead due to construction and maintenance projects. When we think of the Dominican Republic, we think about their endless weather of sunshine and stunning beaches! What you probably didn’t know is that the Dominican Republic is the only country in the world to have an image of the Holy Bible on its national flag. Yes, it’s true! The national flag is formatted blue-red-blue-red with a white central cross. When used for official purposes, it includes the coat of arms. A Dominican revolutionary known as La Trinitaria highlighted their Christian heritage by placing a white cross on the background of the blue-red flag. This revolution started in February 27, 1844, and the flag designed by Juan Pablo Duarte, was lifted the next day. The independence movement prompted a constitution to be formed for the Dominican Republic and this established the official flag on November 6, 1844. The order of the colors was re-established so that the blue and red colours would alternate, with the white cross between them. The coat of arms in the centre of the flag incorporates the national flag, a Bible and a cross. There’s also branches of laurel and palm, the name of the country, and the motto “Dios, patria, libertad” (“God, fatherland, liberty”). With some minor artistic changes, the flag has continued in use to the present day. With 200 countries in the world and the Dominican Republic being the only country that has a flag with the image of a bible, is impressive! This is a minor fun fact for some, but this is something I’ll always remember about the D.R., besides it’s breathtaking scenery and weather, of course! 😉
