'GTR' is very much a badge to be feared on the racetracks of the world. Here's a list of some of the amazing cars that made the cut GTR - aka ‘Gran Turismo Racer’ - has been an acronym saved for only the most sacred of automotive machinery of the last few decades. Be it Japanese, Italian, German or British, GTR is a badge that can never be bought; only earned. The new Mercedes-AMG GT R certainly looks to be worthy on paper, but what other cars with the badge are certified hits? We’ve rounded up seven of the best GTRs ever built, all from differing motorsport and road-going backgrounds.

McLaren F1 GTR

The fastest production car of the 90s was already hardcore, but McLaren decided its F1 needed the because race car treatment as well. Known as the F1 GTR, the car was most famous for winning outright victory at the 1995 Le Mans 24-hour race, along with taking 3rd, 4th and 5th place respectively. Powered by the now immortal BMW V12, it took some convincing to get Gordon Murray on board to modify the F1 which was always designed as the ‘ultimate road car’. But in 1995, he relented and the car was stripped down and tightened up to take on the F40 LMs and 911 Turbos that were competing in the GT1 class of World Sportscar racing. With the addition of cooling ducts, a massive rear wing and a restrictor that limited the engine power to only 600bhp, nine original F1 GTRs took to the track with later examples being converted for road use after retirement from racing.

Nissan Skyline R34 GT- R

The R34 Skyline GT-R is firmly established as one of the all-time sought-after cars of the 1990s and early 2000s. With around 280bhp, the four-wheel drive Skyline was so far ahead of any other touring car of its era and gained its legendary title by destroying all-comers at the Bathurst 1000 in its past generations. The recipe of a twin-turbocharged straight-six made for a top speed of 186mph in the last few R34s made, although the R35 soon came along and made the older Skyline seem extremely docile in comparison. Due to customers complaining that the R33 was too bulky, the R34 was shortened and had a huge amount of technology crammed into it like G-force sensors, lap timers and a carbon fibre rear diffuser on the V-spec variants. Although it is nigh-on impossible to obtain a clean example in the UK today, the R34 Skyline GTR is about as good as it gets for the vast majority of petrolheads. With a 4.0-Litre V8, 444bhp, rear-wheel drive, a six-speed manual transmission and a 0-60 time of 3.4 seconds; the E46 M3 GTR was a beast. Due to a lack of motorsport success with the standard inline six-pot, the engineers at BMW developed the GTR’s V8 alongside the Williams F1 V10 used in the 2001 season. Entered into the American Le Mans Series in the GT category, the V8 allowed the M3 GTR to topple the mighty 911 GT3-R which had beaten the straight-six Beamer comfortably the year before. Not being too chuffed with the 2001 result, Porsche complained that BMW broke the rules by placing a powertrain in its car that wasn’t available in its road cars. In response, ten road-going GTRs were manufactured. Changes in the rules which upped the amount of road cars required for homologation consigned the V8 E46 to the history books, but it still remains a Munich motorsport icon.

Lamborghini Diablo GTR

The Diablo GTR was a factory-made racing special, designed for the Diablo Supertrophy one-make race series. Following the standard procedures of more power and less weight, the GTR was based on the Diablo GT supercar and was entered into numerous Australian races, finishing 8th at Bathurst in 2003. Pumping out 590bhp and 472lb ft of torque, the single-seat supercar was one of the last variants of the Diablo before it made room for the Murcielago.

Mercedes Benz CLK GTR

The CLK GTR is a Gran Turismo legend that was the fancy of every 90s gamer. A handful of homologated road cars were produced in order to meet the regulations for racing in the FIA GT Championship, but even those cars still had full carbonfibre bodies and a bespoke V12 engine producing over 600bhp. It’s a little known fact that AMG actually purchased a McLaren F1 GTR to test against its own car to see if it met the previous year’s winning standard. It took just 128 days for the car to go from technical drawings to physical completion and the Mercedes team went on to beat the McLarens in the CLK GTR’s opening season of racing.

You can’t mention the GTR acronym without thinking of the R35. The latest generation of performance car from Nissan graced our roads back in 2007 and has gone on to conquer the supercar world with its slight developments over the years. Known primarily for its blistering acceleration, the R35 has been slaughtering Ferraris and Lamborghinis on the quarter-mile for the best part of a decade and has cemented the GTR as a true great of the automotive world. Only recently have cars like the 911 Turbo S finally caught up with the sub-three second 0-60mph times achieved by the Nissan GTR using its sophisticated launch control system. With the addition of a face-mangling amount of grip through a robust four-wheel drive system, the quintessential GTR will still be getting all up in Maranello’s grill with the brand new tweaked car going on sale in the near future.
