What the word “canon” actually means (Japan vs The West)

fuck-yeah-gruvia:

Canon, canon, canon. How many times have we seen this word thrown around and how many times do we see fans argue over what’s considered canon? Plenty! Let’s clear up some confusion. “Canon” simply means “official in story”, regardless of subject. It’s canon x character has red hair, it’s canon these characters are in love, it’s canon x is stronger than y, etc. There is not a one-to-one translation for “canon” in the Japanese language, as it is a very western concept. However, they do have their own word for it, which is the actual definition of canon. In Japan, the word for canon is 公式 (kōshiki/official). But their perception of what constitutes official is different than that of the west. There is a cultural difference between Japan and the west, as Japanese fans consider “canon” couples to have clearly defined mutual feelings. Meanwhile, the west needs “canon” to be far more explicit, such as dating, marriage, and/or kids. Such differences are indicative of the general relationships, dating, and courtship rituals between the cultures (ie: the Japanese are far more subtle and private about relationships in general). In reality though, what really matters are Japanese tropes/conventions because this is a Japanese manga written by a Japanese man and largely geared towards a Japanese audience. As such, placing Western expectations on a Japanese work can lead to differences in opinion; however, it is up to us, as the Western readers, to embrace and understand a different mindset to fully get the intent. Therefore, if the author (which by the way, Mashima-sensei considered Gruvia canon in 545, the final chapter of the original) and fans consider a ship canon/official even without explicit dating, perhaps we who are overseas should feel the same way. The Japanese fans have considered Gruvia to be canon for quite awhile. Yup. THIS. Gruvia has been considered canon in Japan for ages because Gray has clearly loved Juvia since at least the Alvarez arc. That’s why we keep just getting more variations of Gray loves Juvia since 499. That was their canon, and probably as far as Mashima is concerned, he doesn’t need to take them any farther, because they are official to him. So while I’ll never say no to more Gruvia (kiss, dating, proposal, marriage, and kids), I’ve also come to the realization that what the western fans expect from canon may not ever be what we get for Gruvia. And that’s ok. Because gruvia have come a long way, and Gray loving Juvia has been expressed in more ways than I ever thought it would. This tsun, who has tried to throw his life away on multiple occasions, and literally died for Juvia twice, has now decided Juvia is why he can go on living. He lives for her - to be with her - to love her. And that’s pretty amazing.

How do you know if you have a strong connection?

Signs of an emotional connection You care about each other's needs and desires. You share openly. You don't just hear each other; you really listen. You know each other deeply. You're interested in each other's hobbies, even if you don't "get" it. It's all about the little details. It's a judgment-free zone. More items...

An emotional connection is a feeling of alignment and intimacy between two people that goes beyond just physical attraction, having fun together, surface-level conversations, or even intellectual similarities. Instead, it feels like you're connecting on a deeper soul level—and feel secure connecting that deeply. "Just like children, adults need to feel a secure attachment to another adult," couples therapist Josie Rosario, LMSW, MSed, explains to mbg. "That means it's important for us to know that someone will be consistently available, especially in time of physical or emotional needs." Think of it this way: This type of connection imbues the relationship with emotional texture, adding an essential feeling of security that establishes a foundation for genuine intimacy to blossom. When we feel unsafe to let down our guard, the bond between couples can be superficial at best. "As humans, the need for emotional connection is wired into our survival," adds licensed psychologist Justine Grosso, Psy.D. "It helps us feel a greater sense of belonging, which facilitates general well-being."
