But the truth is that most millionaires and billionaires follow the two basic rules of maintaining wealth. Those rules are: 1) Don’t lose the money, and 2) Don’t forget Rule #1.

Since not losing money is of primary importance, the super-wealthy often keep much of their holdings in cash or cash equivalents. While cash typically provides relatively low returns, and is at risk of losing buying power due to inflation, it isn’t subject to the volatility of, say, equities — stocks — or even real estate. Millionaires and billionaires also recognize the importance of keeping enough cash available to cover living expenses, as well as any emergencies that may arise. They also tend to keep cash on hand to take advantage of any investment opportunities that might arise. Cash equivalents, which include things like bank CDs and Treasury bills, are often used by millionaires and billionaires to fund their ongoing expenses. By creating a “ladder” of these cash equivalent investments, they can fund ongoing expenses while still getting a better rate of return than in, for example, a savings account.

Laddering CDs Here’s how it works. You purchase a series of CDs or Treasury bills with various yields. For example, you can buy a 3-month CD, a 6-month CD, a 9-month CD and a 12-month CD. After three months, when the first CD matures, if you don’t need the cash, you can reinvest it into a 12-month CD. When the 6-month CD matures, you can do the same thing. And again when the 9-month CD matures. Now you have a ladder of investments that mature every three months, providing available cash if you need it. And the interest rate on a 12-month CD is often much better than that of a savings account.
