I believe there are four types of loyalty: The loyalty of CONVENIENCE. The loyalty of COERCION. The loyalty of COST. The loyalty of COMMITMENT.

I am fascinated by the concept of loyalty. What causes someone to commit to a brand, a cause, a company, a candidate? What causes us to change our loyalties?

The common assumption is that loyalty is a basic thing - you are or you aren't loyal. It's the consumer who wouldn't use anything but Crest toothpaste. Or grocery shop anywhere but Whole Foods. Or buy only Toyotas. Or watch only Fox News. These are examples of loyalty, but they only capture one dimension of loyalty.

I believe there are four types of loyalty:

The loyalty of CONVENIENCE

The loyalty of COERCION

The loyalty of COST

The loyalty of COMMITMENT

CONVENIENCE...

This is the CVS in my neighborhood. Their records indicate I am a "loyal" customer. I am, but not because I hold any particular affection for the store. I go because it's on the right side of the road and my prescriptions are registered with the pharmacy.

COERCION...

This is Delta Airlines. I fly Delta a lot. In fact, I'm waiting for a Delta flight as I type this. But I don't fly Delta because I love the planes or the seats or the peanuts. I fly Delta because they dominate the routes I travel.

COST...

This is the Kirkland brand at Costco. Buy a dress shirt for under $20. Or toilet paper that's cheaper than any name brand. Or milk or beef or jeans or just about anything you can think of. The quality is good, but the price is incredible. For some people, cost is everything on most purchases. For others, devotion to brands or convenience matter more than saving a few dollars. Costco tries to straddle the middle by offering the best price while maintaining quality.

COMMITMENT...

This is the Holy Grail for every company and organization. When consumers feel true commitment, they are less concerned about price. They will accept a measure of inconvenience. And they don't feel pressured or coerced because it's not their only choice. Apple and Amazon are often mentioned as examples of companies with strong loyalty. Both have done an amazing job building brands that inspire deep devotion. But there are plenty of older, non-tech brands that enjoy comparable loyalty. Ford, Chevy, and Dodge truck owners are legendarily loyal. Bass Pro shoppers will drive hundreds of miles to visit a store. Red Wing shoes have a fanatical following. Jack Daniels, Harley Davidson, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Coca-Cola, Tiffany & Company, In-N-Out Burger, and many others all benefit from passionately committed customers.

The Lesson

Loyalty is not one thing...it's four. Each type of loyalty has value - and they aren't mutually exclusive. But the most important lesson is the incredibly fragile nature of loyalty. Sports figures aren't the only free agents; we are all free agents in all of our purchases and engagements.

How to scare a narcissist?

There's nothing a narcissist fears more than being left alone. Block their phone number, unfriend them on social media, and don't even acknowledge their presence if you're ever in the same room with one another. This won't just scare a narcissist—it will devastate them.

Tired of feeling like a narcissist is pushing you around? Scaring a narcissist may seem like a tall order if they act so grandiose and confident all the time, but it’s actually quite easy to scare a narcissist. Most narcissists are fairly fragile, and it doesn’t take a lot to spook them into feeling out of control or weak. In this article, we’ll cover every strategy you’d ever need to strike fear in the heart of a narcissist and take your power back. This article is based on an interview with our licensed clinical psychologist, Liana Georgoulis, Psy.D. Check out the full interview here.
