Cheating is never easy to deal with. But, according to experts, an affair that’s based on deep feelings is tougher to forgive than one that’s only physical. Here’s the thing: There are two types of cheating—physical and emotional. While the former is self-explanatory, involving an attraction that leads to some kind of physical proximity, intimacy, and contact; the latter has more to do with finding a connection with someone on a psychological level. While both are deemed immoral, common opinion recognises emotional cheating as being more devastating. Why? Psychologist Amanpreet Nagpal, founder of wellness brand Miracles, answers…

Understanding emotional cheating

Emotional cheating is when one is emotionally involved with someone apart from their own partner, and feel that that person can easily replace their partner should the circumstances be different. It also includes being emotionally close to someone, but a person may feel the need to hide that emotional relationship from their partner because, somewhere, they know that this is a feeling that ideally should be only shared with the person you are in a relationship with.

What makes emotional cheating worse than physical cheating?

Considering that emotional attachment is what keeps a couple connected to each other in a long-term commitment, finding out that your partner shares that kind of bond with someone else will obviously be more devastating. Also, emotional cheating deprives the existing partner of emotional connection, promoting irreparable damage in trust and intimacy, causing a lack of communication and plenty of insecurities.

Things people need to know about ‘emotional affairs’

While emotional cheating is a subjective issue, it should not be ignored as it might have damaging consequences. This sort of outside validation often begins because emotional needs aren’t being met in your current relationship. Usually, people don't acknowledge that they are emotionally cheating on their partner as they are not involved in a physical act. An emotional affair or involvement is a conscious choice and one needs to own the responsibility of the consequences that follow their actions. Indulging in emotional communication with someone other than your partner drifts you away from your relationship. A healthy relationship can be compared to two wheels of a bike. Both are required to maintain balance. If one goes missing, it's impossible to carry on. According to Nagpal, in some ways it is more disturbing to know and forgive your partner for forming and building an emotional attachment to someone else. However, it's a breach of trust either way. “Trust is a fundamental emotional factor and, once broken, it takes a lot of effort, patience and compassion to rebuild,” she says.
